Sandeep’s description of the walk was:
On Saturday the 18th we are leading a week which will be the first of its kind: a walk to honour all the men from Highams Park and Hale End who fell in the Great War.
There are First World War plaques in our four local churches listing the names of local men. Highams Park and Hale End was in the Borough of Walthamstow in 1918 and their names are all recorded in a ‘Book of Sacrifice’, which is kept in Vestry House Museum. We have been given access to the book itself and also a facsimile copy to look at on the 18th of November.
As part of a local First World War ‘walk of remembrance’ and quest, we will be noting the names on the 4 church memorials, then travelling by 212 bus to Vestry House Museum to look up the men in the Book of Sacrifice.
As part of the walk, I will give you an idea of what Highams Park and Hale End was like in 1914.
After a short pub break, we will then walk to the Cenotaph in the grounds of the Town Hall, where individuals can lay crosses, poppies or small wreaths at the cenotaph to commeroate indicudual men or ancestors. The Society will also lay a wreath on behalf the people of Highams Park.
